It is desirable to handle such needs at the local lodge level whenever possible. Many lodges established reserves to aid distressed brother, their families, or their widows. Sometimes the need extends beyond the means of the local lodge, however. Around the turn of the last century, a brother made a donation of about $60.00 to begin a Grand Lodge Benevolent Fund to assist lodges in responding to cases which extend beyond the ability of the Lodge.
The Colorado Masons Benevolent Fund Scholarship programs were established in 1966 with a couple of thousand dollars and a great vision for the future. The Masons of Colorado from that humble start have taken that vision and turned it into a premier Scholarship program for Colorado public High Seniors. What started with a few thousand dollars and a couple of students has grown to over $10 million dollars in awarded scholarships to nearly 1200 students. The only requirements are that an applicant is a US citizen and a graduating public high school senior in Colorado and he or she attend an institution of higher learning within the State of Colorado.
The Colorado Masons Benevolent Fund started this program in 2003. This one time grant of $3,000 is for Vo-Tech school or two year Associates Degree programs. The application process is the same as the full scholarship program. These recipients will also be selected by the Scholarship Committee.
